Item Description
Other Marion County Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory
Item Work Description
The purpose of the project is to conduct an updated inventory of historic structures and districts in Marion County. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106) requires INDOT, in consultation with the Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology (the State Historic Preservation Office, hereafter, DHPA), to 1) identify resources that are at least 50 years old and are eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and 2) to assess the potential impacts upon those historic properties resulting from federally funded or licensed projects managed by INDOT. The Indiana Historic Sites & Structures Inventory (IHSSI) is a prime mechanism for evaluating the NRHP eligibility of historical resources. Official results of the IHSSI are entered in the State Historic Architecture and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) and the Indiana Historic Buildings, Bridges and Cemetery (IHBBC) GIS map, the official digital delivery system of the DHPA. The existing inventory of Marion County was conducted from the mid-1980s and 1990s. As a result, resources dating after 1945 must be identified and evaluated on a case-by-case basis due to a lack of prior evaluation. Given the age of the existing township inventories, virtually no historic districts and few individual sites dating to the postwar period were identified. These resources are ubiquitous in Marion County. Another shortcoming of the existing inventory is that it tends to omit resources related to historically understudied populations. Re-evaluation may also be needed because the eligibility status of resources may have changed in the decades since they were last inventoried. INDOT plans to engage the services of one qualified consultant firm to complete the planning, survey, and recordation of resources in Center, Warren, Wayne, Pike, Washington, and Lawrence townships in Marion County. It is estimated that approximately 60,000 resources will be surveyed in Marion County. The includes known resources that require resurvey and newly identified resources. This will include 80 new historic districts with approximately 24,000 resources. DHPA will guide and review the areas and resources to be identified. DHPA will provide its Survey123 field application for IHSSI/SHAARD, will train the field surveyors, and monitor/certify the results. This effort is expected to take 24 months. Final deliverables will be the final interim reports for Center, Warren, Wayne, Pike, Washington, and Lawrence townships in Marion County.
